There’s plenty of food items that I hunger for: pasta, pizza, brownies…I may need to add some vegetables. We all have items we hunger for be it specialty treats, a lifestyle, a new job or promotion, a beach excursion during the cold winter months!
The Beatitudes tell us those who hunger after righteousness are the ones who will be blessed in this life (Matt.5:6). Blessed are those who seek to quench their hunger with the things of God. For it is they who will be filled, according to Scripture.
Peter instructs us to crave after God’s Word so that we can grow up in our salvation (1 Pt. 2:1-3). For children to grow up parents must provide a proper diet. Malnourishment is deadly. It is not different in the spiritual realm. To grow up in our salvation means to develop as a Christian. It is to become mature and develop into a whole, well-rounded believer.
The Bible tells us a proper diet is important. Jesus even said in Matthew 4:4 “Man does not live on bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” The Word of God is proper nourishment for our Christian development. We cannot mature and become well-rounded, complete Christians without it. Therefore, as Peter tells us, we are to crave and hunger for God’s Word.
